On the morning of 8 April, the 16th National Assembly approved the Prime Minister's proposal on the appointment of ministers, including Mr Hoàng Minh Sơn – member of the Party Central Committee and Secretary of the Party Committee of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) – as Minister of Education and Training for the 2026–2031 term, with 481 of 481 votes, or 100% of the deputies present, in favour.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoàng Minh Sơn (born on 25 September 1969; hometown: Hung Yen province) is currently Secretary of the MOET Party Committee. He holds a doctorate in Automation Engineering from the Dresden University of Technology (Germany).
The new Minister of Education and Training worked at Hanoi University of Science and Technology from 2000, was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 2006 and successively held key leadership positions at the university before being appointed Deputy Minister of Education and Training in October 2020.
On 3 September 2025, he was appointed by the Prime Minister as Chair of the University Council and President of Viet Nam National University, Ha Noi.
At the 14th National Party Congress, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoàng Minh Sơn was elected to the 14th Party Central Committee. He is also a deputy to the 16th National Assembly.
An experienced education manager who has made many important contributions to the development of higher education in Viet Nam, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoàng Minh Sơn was awarded the Prime Minister's Certificate of Merit in 2009, the Third-Class Labour Order in 2017 and ministerial Certificates of Merit.
With his practical experience over five years as Deputy Minister of Education and Training, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoàng Minh Sơn is expected to continue bringing his abilities, management experience and innovative thinking to bear, working with the Ministry's leadership to direct the effective implementation of the Party's and State's guidelines and policies and to drive breakthroughs in the development of education and training in the coming period.
